SmartVariantManagement question?

I am currently exploring SmartVariantManagement, however, I have not come across an article that explains how the variants are stored in a real backend server for retrieval in a new session.

I would like to know:

- Where the variants are stored

- How is it stored

- How is it retrieved

Could you please enlighten me on the topic?
